Plenary Talk
Anthropogenic changes to Amazon's flying rivers
I will show how complex networks and other dynamic systems techniques have helped us understand the interactions between the atmosphere and the biosphere. In particular, I will discuss how climate change and deforestation disturbances could push the current equilibrium and trigger the savannization of the Amazon. Such phase transition presents strong hysteresis and its consequences would go beyond the limits of the forest, since the precipitation in a big portion of South America depends on the recycling of moisture over the Amazon.
